In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Characteristics of mother’s milk:
Allah, Most Gracious, has implanted mercy and tenderness in the hearts of msh3er towards their children. Such mercy and tenderness are but part of Allah’s Divine Mercy, which makes a mother’s breast abounds in a unique kind of milk that best suits her baby.
Scientists confirm that the mother’s milk is not only amazing but also unique, as no other kind of milk mankind could ever make is comparable to it.
The remarkable thing is that Allah, Most Gracious, endues the baby with special digestive enzymes that are most suitable for the mother’s milk. If it is fed with a cow’s milk, whether fresh or dried, the baby’s stomach cannot digest it, and a great amount of proteins and amino-acids remain undigested; and getting rid of such substances exhausts kidneys. That is why the kidneys of a baby fed with a cow’s milk are tired by expelling fats, amino-acids and proteins that the baby’s stomach cannot digest. This is because the digestive enzymes that the baby has are in full congruence with the mother’s milk but not with the cow’s since a cow’s milk has four times as many amino acids as those in the mother’s milk.
Medical scientists say that the rise of the ratio of amino acids in the baby’s blood causes mental retardation, heart and vascular diseases, diseases of the digestive system and the liver, among other chronic illnesses and diseases that last life-long.
Composition of the mother’s milk changes so as to meet the baby’s different needs and requirements and according to its digestive ability. It is more suitable, more condensed, more digestible, and less harmful than any other kind of milk. It is the safest nutritional way for a baby from the viewpoint of sterility and cleanliness, as it is taken directly from the mother’s nipple, without being contaminated, and its temperature is steady. Such unique qualities are not available in case of artificial nursing. It is always reasonably warm in both cold and hot weather. It is easily digested, as it needs only one and a half hours to be digested, whereas bottled-milk needs more than three hours to be digested. Moreover, a baby that suckles from its mother’s breast acquires immunity against all illnesses, as the mother’s milk contains substances that prevent intestinal and respiratory infections. Besides, it is more economical and cheaper than other kinds of milk.
In fact, natural nursing protects the baby from most cases of asthma, intestinal infections and other common diseases.
Also, the mother’s milk contains substances that prevent germs and bacteria from sticking to the internal walls of the intestines, and it contains acid substances that kill germs. It has also been found out that natural nursing protects the baby from such serious diseases and epidemics as cholera, dysentery, infantile paralysis, and tetanus, simply because the mother’s immunity is all to be found in her milk that she gives to her baby. Natural nursing also protects the mother from malignant breast tumors, just as it protects the baby from heart and vascular diseases, and nutritional and metabolic ones. Furthermore, early weaning causes psychological disorders and behavioral abnormalities.
Mother’s milk needs no preparation; it is ready to use day and night, in both travel and settlement. It is always available at the proper temperature and with an ideal sterilization. It is easily digested and provides immunity from most diseases. In this context, Allah, Most Gracious, says,
“Verily, We have created man in toil. Does he think that none can overcome him? He says (boastfully): ‘I have wasted wealth in abundance!’ Does he think that none can see him? Have We not made for him a pair of eyes, a tongue and a pair of lips, and guided him to An-Najdain?”
[XC; 4-10]
The word An-Najdain in the above Quranic Verses is interpreted by the venerable Companion Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, as the mother’s breasts.
[Ibn Katheer (4/513)]
Psychologists confirm that when a baby is born, it has no knowledge or experience. All of the abilities, conceptions, experiences, talents, perceptions, and qualifications that adults have are the fruits of their interactions with the environment. To this effect, the Quranic Verse goes,
“And Allah brings you out from the wombs of your msh3er while you know nothing. And He gives you (your) hearing, sight, and hearts that you might show (adequate) gratitude (to Allah).”
[XVI; 78]
But a reflex, as psychologists confirm, is born with the baby and does not need to be learned, namely “the suck-reflex”, without which no human being could ever be found on the surface of the earth. This is because a newly born baby can not be taught by its parents the importance of suckling or how to take his mother’s breast with its mouth and begin suckling, for it can neither understand nor do such a thing that is too difficult for a baby to learn.
The love and tenderness that the baby receives from its mother while suckling grant it mercy that reflects positively on its relationships with all other fellow humans in the future. That is why Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful, bids msh3er,
“And msh3er should give suck to their children for two whole years, for those who desire to complete the term of suckling.”
[II; 233]
In this context, medical scientists say that the minimum period of natural nursing is six months, and the full-term of natural nursing is two whole years.
A delicate point: In case the mother is unable to give suck to her baby, scientists insist that another woman should substitute for the mother in this job. In other words, the baby should not be given cow milk. In this context, Allah, Most Merciful, says,
“And if you decide on a foster sucking-mother for your children, there is no sin on you.”
[Ibid; 233]
Therefore, the alternative way is not bottle nursing but rather another foster sucking-woman who is healthy, wise and of good character.
In most countries governments force milk factories to write on every powdered-milk container something like:
“A Mother’s milk is unmatched.”
In a medical research carried out in one of the developed countries the researchers measured the natural intelligence of a number of children from different countries and its relationship with natural and artificial nursing. The results were amazing, for children of the Pacific Islands were the most intelligent of all children under study. This is because they did not have any artificial nursing. This confirms the importance of Allah’s Divine Command to all msh3er:
“And msh3er should give suck to their children for two whole years.”
[II; 233]
Such is the Religion and Legislation of the Maker, Allah, All-Mighty, Most Gracious! So, what prevents a slave from obeying the Maker, and what prevents him from being a true believer, after his Lord, Most Merciful, has guided him to his mother’s breasts while he was still too young? That is why some knowledgeable believers invoked the Lord, Allah, All-Mighty:
You bestowed Your Kindness upon us in the dark of the wombs,
And being the Best Guardian: in the wombs You did protect us.
And You made tenderness in the msh3er’ hearts to dwell for us,
And in their breasts you caused our sustenance to flow.
And You created us infants, and made our tongues
Acknowledge that You are, indeed, our Lord.
And You made us know You, so Praised is
Your Divine Face, as You provided us with Your Guidance!
To wrap up, Allah, Most Gracious, has implanted His Mercy in the msh3er’ hearts and caused to run from their breasts milk as psychological mercy and pure natural food.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations
