In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A Sign of the miracles of the Quran: Among the Quranic Miracles that have to do with embryology are Allah’s Words,
“And indeed We created man from an extraction of clay. Thumma (After some time), We made him (i.e. his offspring) a semen drop, in a secure lodging (i.e. the mother’s womb). Thumma (After some time), We created, of the drop, a clot. Fa (immediately after that), We created, of the clot, a lump of flesh. Fa (immediately after that), We created, of the lump of flesh, bones. Fa (immediately after that), We garmented the bones in flesh. Then, We brought it forth as another creature. So, Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.”
[Al-Mu’minum; 12, 13, 14, 15]
The most recent up-to-date discoveries in embryology show that there is an interval of time between the stage of the semen and that of the clot. This interval is more than two weeks, during which the growth of the embryo slows down, because it is time for the semen to be deeply rooted in the wall of the womb. In this stage, the embryo does not grow but rather establishes ways for absorbing food from the womb, and it is like a disk of cells arranged in a couple of parallel lines. The slowness at this stage of growth of the embryo in the second and third weeks of fertilization is expressed by the Quranic conjunction “Thumma”, which means “after some time”, but the rapid short-termed stage at which the clot grows into a lump of flesh is expressed through the conjunction “Fa”, which means “immediately after that”: “Fa (immediately after that), We created, of the lump of flesh, bones. Fa (immediately after that), We garmented the bones in flesh.” For one stage Allah, All-Mighty, says, “Thumma (After some time), We created, of the drop, a clot.”
Within a period of two weeks, the fertilized ovule, after having split into a hundred cells, does not grow but rather seeks to deeply root itself in the wall of the womb. That is why its growth slows down. This is expressed in Allah’s Divine Book, the Noble Quran, by the use of the conjunction “Thumma”:
“And indeed We created man from an extraction of clay. Thumma (After some time), We made him (i.e. his offspring) a semen drop, in a secure lodging (i.e. the mother’s womb). Thumma (After some time), We created, of the drop, a clot. Fa (immediately after that), We created, of the clot, a lump of flesh. Fa (immediately after that), We created, of the lump of flesh, bones. Fa (immediately after that), We garmented the bones in flesh. Then, We brought it forth as another creature. So, Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.”
[Al-Mu’minun; 12, 13, 14, 15]
Such are the Divine Words of Allah, All-Mighty, All-Wise, Creator of all worlds, Whose Signs and Miracles never end. Also, the miracles of His Divine Book, the Noble Quran, never end. Every now and then, with the development of science and human knowledge new miracles of the Noble Quran come to light.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations
